Determine Dishwasher Water Line Size Needs
Water Supply Line Size
The typical water supply line size used for residential dishwashers is 3/8" in diameter. This supply line attaches to the dishwasher on one end using a 3/8" compression fitting. The other end also uses a compression fitting to connect to the water supply valve, usually located under the kitchen sink.
This standard 3/8" supply line provides adequate water flow and pressure for most dishwashers. Larger supply lines may be needed if your home's water pressure is low. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific dishwasher model.
Drain Hose Size
For the drain hose that removes wastewater from the dishwasher, the standard size is 5/8" in inside diameter. This attaches to the dishwasher on one end, and needs to route to the kitchen sink drain or garbage disposal to deposit used water. When purchasing a drain hose, make sure to buy one long enough to reach your sink plumbing.
Water Pressure Requirements
While most dishwashers require a minimum of 20 psi of water pressure, 60 psi is typically recommended for optimal cleaning performance. If your home has lower water pressure, choosing a larger 3/4" or 1/2" supply line can help compensate and provide adequate flow.
Also check your dishwasher manual - some newer models may have higher pressure requirements. Installing supply lines that are too narrow can restrict water flow and lead to issues.
Special Water Conditions
Do you have hard water? The mineral deposits in hard water can build up and clog small supply lines over time. In hard water areas, a larger 3/4" supply line is a good idea to reduce mineral deposits.

Connecting the Water Supply Line
Measure and Cut Line to Correct Length

Plan the route for your drain hose from the dishwasher to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Make sure you have enough length so there are no sharp bends, and allow for some slack.
The hose must slope gradually downward to encourage water drainage. Avoid any uphill sections that could obstruct water flow.
Drain Hose Attachment
There are two common ways to attach the drain hose. For a direct sink drain connection, secure the hose end over the drain pipe with a hose clamp. For garbage disposals, clamp the hose to the dishwasher inlet on the disposal.
Position the hose connection point slightly higher than the dishwasher unit so water can gravity drain downwards through the hose.
Checking Drain Hose for Leaks
Run an initial test cycle on your dishwasher to verify the drain hose is leak-free. Check where it connects to the sink drain and also the back of the dishwasher itself.
If you notice water dripping, try adjusting the hose attachments and clamps. Apply more sealant if needed to achieve a watertight connection.
